letter dated 1596, sent by Erasmus Tollinger (also known as
Dollinger von Grünau), who had recently assumed office as
administrator of Freidegg, to his superior and patron Reichart
Strein, imperial councilor and later advisor to Emperor Matthias,
extensive communication concerning administrative issues at
Freidegg including staffing, household management, provisioning and
discipline, notably mentions camel keepers (Kamelknechts),
including one by the name of Thikl, indicating the presence of
exotic animals within the noble estate, a rare prestige symbol at
the time reflecting Streins wealth, cosmopolitan status and
proximity to courtly culture, highlights internal organization of a
noble residence in late 16th century Lower Austria, exceptionally
detailed insight into early modern domestic management and
reporting structures within princely households, written in
chancery hand, well preserved with full address and docketing on
